Professional Development Opportunities

On-Demand Access to Monthly Meetings and Seminars

We are excited to announce a team of PMI-GLC volunteers are undertaking development of an on-demand rebroadcast option for monthly meetings and seminars.  The intent is to increase membership value by providing a way to obtain Professional Development that you’d really like to attend in-person, but occasionally cannot attend  - due to other commitments.  The initiative is early in development, and the team would like your input.  Speak-up if this potential new benefit  is of interest to you. Learn More.

ProjectTalks Detroit 2017 ⋅ March 23, 2017

Have you ever listened to a really good Ted Talk? They are short, engaging, and powerful. When done well, they make you feel inspired, motivated, ready to do something different in the world.

We believe that these talks can help in many areas of professional development, including our own Project Management. PMI-GLC is excited to announce a new local event where we’ll bring together a diverse set of local and international speakers to deliver you ProjectTalks – a two hour gathering of networking, learning and inspiration!

Co-hosted by David Barrett (our fall professional development day speaker and facilitator) and Tom Keuten (our January dinner speaker and longtime Corporate Roundtable leader), this event will deliver connections, fun and 2 PDUs with your attendance.

Mastering Complexity in Project Management

Friday, April 28, 2017 - 8 AM - 5 PM

We are excited to announce that Andrew Tarvin fhas been tapped to be the keynote speaker for PMIGLC's 16th Annual Spring Symposium.

The Symposium will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, MI from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Opening Keynote by Andrew Tarvin

"Humor That Works: A Project Manager's Guide to Using Humor"

Andrew Tarvin is the world’s first Humor Engineer. He teaches people how to get better results while having more fun.

Andrew graduated from The Ohio State University, Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering and a minor in playing videogames. While at Ohio State, Andrew also started an improv group, despite never having done any theater and being very much an introvert (if you know Meyers Briggs, he’s INTJ; if you know Star Wars, he’s R2D2).

After graduating, Andrew worked as global project manager at Procter & Gamble where he managed million dollar projects for a $350 million business, earning multiple internal awards for his leadership, communication style, and jokes he included at the ends of emails (true story). He also continued performing improv and stand-up comedy until he decided to combine his two lives and proclaimed himself the Corporate Humorist of P&G.

In 2008, Andrew moved to New York City to continue to grow in his role as P&G’s corporate humorist, where he led an award-winning effort to bring more humor to the workplace. In 2009, he started Humor That Works, a consultancy on how to use humor to get better results, and in 2012, he left P&G to lead his company full-time.

Since then, Andrew has helped more than 200 organizations increase productivity through humor—including P&G, GE, ESPN, Microsoft, the U.S. Navy, PepsiCo, and the International Association of Canine Professional (also a true story)—and has performed in over 1,000 shows all around the world.

The lineup of other speakers who are currently being vetted possess a diversity of backgrounds including manufacturing, software engineering, healthcare, financial management, banking, project management, entrepreneurship, and marketing.

Don’t Miss PMIGLC-Branded Social Media Photographs at Upcoming Events!

Be sure to take advantage of a PMI-GLC brand improvement initiative that continues for only 4 more events in 2017. A trial was conducted in late 2016 to provide no-fee PMI-branded social media photographs to increase chapter membership value. Many have taken advantage of the offering, so the PMI-GLC Membership group will continue the offering at monthly meetings and Symposium through April 2017.

When you register for the event, do so early - weeks before the event. If photograph seats are still available when you register, also select the option to have your photo taken in front of a PMI-branded backdrop. Beginning with Symposium in April, larger GLC events may possibly be staffed with a professional photographer that will charge a nominal fee for this service.
